Have a (Healthy) Heart -- Give Blood

February is American Heart Month, and one of the simplest things you can do to save your own is to donate blood. Not only are you likely to benefit, but one pint of blood can save three lives! Blood donations are at tragically low levels in this country. Here in Los Angeles, a measly 3 percent of the residents are blood donors – 3 percent!!!!

Donating blood doesn’t take much time. Plus, you may be doing yourself a favor, too. Statistics show that blood donors have a lower risk of heart attack, leading some researchers to theorize that donating blood reduces the amount of iron in the body. That theory is supported by the fact that after menopause, when women no longer lose iron each month, heart attacks become far more common.

Do you and several other people a favor. For details, contact the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org and click on “Blood Service” in the left-hand column, or contact your local hospital’s blood donation division.

An Inconvenient Diet

Is the key to reversing global warming in your kitchen? A growing number of experts say yes. And I don't know anyone who has said it better than Kathy Freston. If you feel the need to know more, author John Robbins has some thoughts on the subject, too.
